Metallic Dyes

The Shaheen metallics are innovative metallic dyes used for printing fabric.  In the early-1950s, together with Dr. Edmund Lutz, his close friend and head dye chemist, Shaheen created a library of metallic colors.  The metallics include gold, silver, the gem colors, and intricate shades such as fuschia, aqua, and lavender.  Sometimes the metallics would outline a print, and other times the metallics were used for the print itself. The metallics could be printed on almost any fabric — for example, cotton and cotton blends, silks, linen, and voile.  It has been almost 70 years since the dyes were first created and yet they remain intact on many Shaheen collectibles.

Shaheen originated the pop-up shop concept by creating “East Meets West” store-within-a-store boutiques for major department stores. These pre-fabricated, self-contained units could be shipped all across the United States and assembled inside major department stores.

Engineered Print

Shaheen pioneered the engineered print, a silk screen design coordinated with the silhouette from the earliest design stages.  Shaheen built his own 24-inch silk screens in order to produce large design motifs, which created stunning prints and garments.
